Waldo Canyon Fire Near Colorado Springs Grows

The Waldo Canyon Fire, burning near Manitou Springs, surged anew on Tuesday, moving quickly toward homes in the Cedar Heights subdivision. The residents of those homes are among the nearly 6,000 people still evacuated from Sunday when nearly 11,000 people were evacuated when the Waldo Canyon Fire  first broke out. The Waldo Canyon Fire  has now consumed 6,200 acres.

As of Tuesday evening, 32,000 additional people have been evacuated including one-third of the households on Air Force Academy grounds.

As nightfall approached on Tuesday, houses were consumed by flames. An unknown number of homes have already been destroyed.

Ash rained down as I-25 was jammed with evacuees and firefighting equipment. Twitter erupted with photos, comments and thoughts for those who may live or have loved-ones that live near the explosive blaze. Witnesses described the blaze as an "apocalypse".

Due to the aggressive expansion of the Waldo Canyon Fire , the pre-evacuation area was expanded on Tuesday for some areas near Woodland Park. Highway 24 is closed west of Colorado Springs and Waldo Canyon Fire officials warned residents near U.S. 24 and the El Paso/Teller County line to be prepared to evacuate, The Denver Post reports.

Around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning the blaze began burning aggressively, according to 7News, and is now reportedly the highest priority Waldo Canyon Fire  in the nation, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Steve Segin said.


Fox31 reports that the Waldo Canyon Fire  has become a high priority, not because of its size, but because of the population it could affect.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reported 200-foot-flames near Cedar Heights this morning with flames only 200 yards away from homes.

The Haines Index -- a scale of 1 to 6 (6 being the worst) that firefighters use to rank Waldo Canyon Fire  growth potential in a region -- is at level "6" again Tuesday and into Wednesday, the same levels reached during last weekend's extreme Waldo Canyon Fire  growth.

Record heat, high winds and low humidity are making this Waldo Canyon Fire  a difficult battle for firefighters. "Monday was a tough day... tougher than Sunday," Waldo Canyon Fire  information officer Greg Heule said to 9News. "Ninety degrees, 25 to 30 mph gusts. No cloud cover at all."

High heat over the weekend produced a surge of new Waldo Canyon Fire  now burning throughout Colorado and also provided fuel and devastating growth conditions for the Waldo Canyon Fire  already burning. A total of ten major fires were burning over the weekend, all part of the worst wildfire season in a decade.

Approximately 600 firefighters are on the scene battling the blaze, according to InciWeb.org.

WALDO CANYON FIRE: Shelters have room for evacuees

3 a.m. This just in from Colorado Springs: "Due to the Waldo Canyon Fire emergency, Mountain Metropolitan Transit fixed route and FREX service will not be operating regular service on Wednesday June 27, 2012.  Metro Mobility will provide only medical scheduled appointments. All fixed route, FREX and Metro Mobility bus drivers please report at your scheduled times for emergency service transportation. "

2:50 a.m. Firefighters continue their battle to save homes this morning. They aren't winning them all. Heard on Waldo Canyon Fire  radio: "We're not going to save this structure." "I just heard the roof collapse."

2:43 a.m. Weather Service: Colorado Springs remains under Red Flag Warning Wednesday.

2:34 a.m. From the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center: "Significant growth is anticipated with active Waldo Canyon Fire  behavior expected overnight."

2:14 a.m. "No signs of a Waldo Canyon Fire  in Ute Park," said Jackie Kirby, public information officer for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. "We can't confirm the Waldo Canyon Fire  crossed Centennial but firefighters did spot embers coming over at 5-5:30 (p.m. Tuesday)."

1:35 a.m. Wind is from the north-northwest according to Waldo Canyon Fire  officials on the scanner, pushing Waldo Canyon Fire  toward more homes in the city.

1:10 a.m. Hotel rooms are available in Manitou Springs, at the Cliff House (12 rooms), Comfort Inn (17) and Silver Saddle (12).

1:02 a.m. All Colorado Springs hotels appear to be booked, according to desk clerks at a dozen area hotels. South Denver Marriott said there may not be a hotel room in Denver available, due to the Waldo Canyon Waldo Canyon Fire  and a big softball tournament.

12:49 a.m. On casualties, Maketa said deputies "haven't heard of any or heard of any suspected."

12:47 a.m. Maketa says security is tight in evacuated parts of the city even as firefighters work to save homes.

12:33 a.m. El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa says the Waldo Canyon Fire  remains "very active" west of Centennial from Flying W. Ranch to just past Vindicator.

12:28 a.m. Caravan of Waldo Canyon Fire trucks and 28 firefighters left Pueblo at 9 p.m. headed here to help with fire.

12:05 a.m. Colorado Springs Utilities reports that the city's water supply remains safe to drink. Facilities not burned.

11:57 p.m. Clarification, Holland Park is evacuated ONLY west of Centennial Boulevard. Check here for an up-to-date map of evacuations.

11:38 p.m. According to scanner traffic, one of the most worrisome areas is just west of Flying W Ranch road, between Wilson Road and Wolfe Ranch Road.

11:23 p.m. Fort Carson has shelters available for Air Force Academy personnel, and their families,  evacuated by the Waldo Canyon Fire. The Air Force evacuees can report to Fort Carson Gate 1. Also, the Red Cross reports that all shelters have plenty of room and even have nurses and crisis counselors on hand. Those shelters are:

    * Cheyenne Mountain High School: 1200 Cresta Road
    * Southeast YMCA: 2190 Jet Wing Drive

EL PASO COUNTY - The Waldo Canyon Fire near Colorado Springs has forced more than 32,000 people out of their homes and destroyed an unknown number of structures.

Several homes have burned in the Mountain Shadows neighborhood. The total number of homes lost is unknown as of Tuesday night.

The Waldo Canyon Fire  exploded after winds in excess of 65 mph fanned the flames Tuesday.

Tuesday, Waldo Canyon Fire  officials last reported the acreage at 6,200 acres with 5 percent containment.

Gov. Hickenlooper joined Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach in a news conference Tuesday night.

"I don't think we've ever seen a wildfire like this in the history of Colorado," Hickenlooper said after flying over the 9-square-mile Waldo Canyon Fire  late Tuesday.

Governor John Hickenlooper also  issued the following statement earlier Tuesday night:

"An unprecedented weather pattern of hot days and dry conditions has made our Waldo Canyon Fire  season among the worst ever. Federal, state and local authorities are working together to address the situation and we are doing everything we can to protect lives and property. If there was an executive order for rain, we'd sign it immediately, but what we can do now is provide support and resources to communities that are most at risk."

Tuesday night, Incident Commander Rich Harvey said the Waldo Canyon Fire is a "firestorm of epic proportions."

Harvey said crews will work through Tuesday night to battle the blaze.

Gardens by the Bay set for official opening on Thursday

With just a few days to its grand opening on Thursday, it is all systems go at Gardens by the Bay.

Over the next 72 hours, more than 1,000 workers will be working round the clock to get the Gardens' Bay South area cleaned up and ready in time for its official opening on June28.

Mr Ng Boon Gee, the Gardens' assistant director for development, gave this update to the media on Monday saying that all the structures and plants are in place.

'We are now in the midst of getting the place tidy and presentable to the public,' said Mr Ng. The Gardens will be open to the public on Friday from 5am. More than 30,000 people are expected to turn up.

An awe-inspiring new green space for Singapore

Bay East is a unique mix of pretty pavilions, lush lawns, tropical palm trees and natural blossoms of all kinds, perfect for an evening stroll or a picnic with family and friends. It also offers an amazing view of the Marina Bay financial district skyline along its two kilometre waterfront promenade.

One of the largest horticultural attractions in the world, Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, opens to the public Friday, June 29, offering a unique fusion of nature and technology.

Since we last reported on the project’s most distinctive element — 18 giant solar-powered, plant-growing “Supertrees” — UK-based landscape architects Grant Associates have released some stunning photos of the £500 million complex.

Built on reclaimed waterfront land, the 101-hectacre gardens comprise three separate landscapes and includes two massive (but energy-efficient) biomes designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects that contain tens of thousands of Mediterranean and tropical plants. Both “cooled conservatories” run on energy generated by the Supertrees and capture and filter runoff water.

In addition, a collection of four heritage gardens “explores the rich cultural significance of different plant species, including their symbolism, religious significance, trade, food, and medicinal uses.” And those are just a few of the highlights.

“The design — which originally won in an international competition — is set to become an integral part of the government’s strategy to integrate natural and built environments,” designboom wrote last spring while documenting the gardens’ construction.

The futuristic look of the Gardens by the Bay has prompted some grumbling among online commenters who say they prefer their outdoor spaces natural and wild, but a bit of artificiality is part of the plan. According to a recent CNNreport, project organizers hope that the space “will become an eco-tourist destination showcasing sustainable practices and plants from across the globe.”


Gardens by the Bay: Now for the final touches

Work is going on round the clock to get everything in place for the official opening of Gardens by the Bay on Thursday.

Over the next 72 hours, more than 1,000 workers will be deployed to get the Gardens' Bay South area cleaned up.

Bay South, the largest of three gardens that make up Gardens by the Bay, houses two climate-controlled conservatories, six dining areas and 18 Supertrees.

SINGAPORE: It's all systems go as final touches are put on Singapore's latest attraction - Gardens by the Bay - ahead of its Friday opening.

And getting there should be a cinch with free daily shuttles from the Marina Bay train station.

The shuttles operate from 9am to 9pm at 10-minute intervals.

These shuttles might operate on a permanent basis if there is a demand.

Visitors can also alight at the Bayfront train station and walk 300 metres to the Gardens.

For those who drive, there will be 720 parking lots.

Cyclists will have bicycle stands to park their bikes as cycling is not allowed in the Gardens.

The supertrees might resemble a science-fiction movie set.

But getting around Singapore's Gardens by the Bay won't be an alien concept.

Visitors can enter the 54-hectare park from seven places.

Most of the attractions will be free. Ticketed areas include the aerial walkway and two cooled conservatories.

Developers said the design of the billion-dollar-park has taken into account everybody's needs.

Ng Boon Gee, assistant director (Development) Gardens by the Bay, said: "All the ramps here are actually constructed in such a way that they are gentle - the wheelchair can be easily pushed up the ramps. So these are the things that we are trying to do to make the space as user-friendly as possible."

On a leisurely stroll, you will encounter birds, and bears - in the form of plant sculptures.

And there are mini heritage gardens to reflect on Singapore's multi-racial composition with hints of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian influences.

If you are tired of walking, you can always hop on a garden cruiser to get around, which will cost between S$3 to S$5.

Managing director of Cafe Crema and Verandah at the Gardens by the Bay, Lim Li-Wei, said: "You can come here (to the cafe) and enjoy handcrafted coffee, or sandwich, as well as local favourites such as hokkien mee, bak kut teh and laksa."

Four more spots for eateries will be up for tender in 2013 which means there'll eventually be more than 10 dining establishments to satisfy the hungry after a walk-in-the-park.


Gardens by the Bay (Chinese: 滨海湾花园) consists of three distinct waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central, set in the heart of Singapore’s new downtown Marina Bay, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir.

Spanning 101 hectares, Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of a strategy by the Singapore government to transform Singapore from a ‘Garden City’ to a ‘City in a Garden’. The stated aim is to raise the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city.

First announced to the public by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the National Day Rally in August 2005, Gardens by the Bay is intended to become Singapore’s premier urban outdoor recreation space, and a national icon.

An international competition for the design of the master plan, held in January 2006, attracted more than 70 entries submitted by 170 firms from 24 countries. Two firms – Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter – were eventually awarded the master plan design for the Bay South and Bay East Gardens respectively.

The Gardens are being developed in phases. Bay South is currently being constructed and is slated to be completed and opened on 29 Jun 2012. [1] Bay East has been developed as an interim park in support of the Youth Olympic Games 2010, and is opened to the public since Nov 2011, allowing an alternate access to the Marina Barrage. The full master plan implementation of Bay East and the development of Bay Central are part of the next phase of development.

Bay East

Bay East is 32 hectares in size and it has a 2km promenade frontage that embroiders the Marina Reservoir. An interim park was developed at Bay East in support of the Youth Olympic Games 2010. The first phase of the garden was opened to the public in Nov 2011.

Bay East is designed as a series of large tropical leaf-shaped gardens, each with its own specific landscaping design, character and theme. There will be five water inlets aligned with the prevailing wind direction, maximising and extending the shoreline while allowing wind and water to penetrate the site to help cool areas of activity around them. Bay East will provide visitors with an unobstructed view of the city skyline.

Bay Central will act as a link between Bay South and Bay East. It stands at 15 hectares with a 3km waterfront promenade that allows for scenic walks stretching from the city centre to the east of Singapore.

Samantha Ann Francis Stomp staff sacked over false 'MRT open door photo

A picture posted Wednesday on citizen journalism website Stomp shows one of its carriage doors wide open.
Train operator SMRT has refuted the presence of a passenger who had taken a picture of one of its train's carriage doors left open while it was travelling, saying that she was never there in the first place.

Ms Samantha Ann Francis, 23, a content producer with citizen journalism website Stomp, had uploaded a photo on Wednesday morning showing one of the train doors wide open.

She claimed that the train was travelling despite the open door and only closed when it reached the next stop at Chinese Garden.

Ms Samantha Ann Francis had boarded the train at 10.15pm on Tuesday night. She told The Straits Times that after the train stopped at the station, the doors on the opposite side to the platform opened first. She then took a picture through the closed doors in front of her. When the doors in front of her opened, she entered the train and took another picture of the opposite doors, one of which remained open until the train stopped at the next stop at Chinese Garden.

Ms Samantha Ann Francis said a Chinese man in T-shirt and bermudas and an Indian man were in the same carriage as her.

Yesterday, she met with SMRT staff at Lakeside MRT to assist in their investigations. She showed them where she was standing when she took the photo and described what she was wearing that night to help SMRT identify her in CCTV footage.

When asked by SMRT staff if her current ez-link card was the one used that night, Ms Samantha Ann Francis answered yes.

However, SMRT told The Straits Times in a statement on Thursday that Ms Samantha Ann Francis was not present at Lakeside MRT.

"We thank (Ms Samantha Ann Francis) for coming forward today to assist us with our investigations. We are checking a few more things, as from our records (CCTV footage and ez-link card trip details), she was not at Lakeside MRT station on 19 June," said the statement.

It added that its trains will not be able to move if the doors are not closed properly and that the railings in her picture do not match those at Lakeside MRT.

"We wish to reassure commuters that the MRT system is built with many fail-safe features to ensure passenger safety", said the company.

Stomp editor Azhar Kasman confirmed yesterday that the photos of the incident were submitted by a Stomp content producer.

"We have verified the details with her and she stands by her account of the incident," said Mr Kasman, in response to claims that Ms Samantha Ann Francis was never at the station.



Stomp staff sacked over false 'MRT open door photo'

A photograph of an MRT train moving with one set of its doors open, has been found to be false.

A content producer of Singapore's citizen journalism website Stomp had initially claimed that she took the photograph last week.

23-year-old Samantha Ann Francis claimed that she took the photograph herself at Lakeside MRT station last Tuesday night.

Following investigations by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), Ms Samantha Ann Francis eventually admitted that she had taken the image from a post on social networking site Twitter.

The original tweet has since been removed.

On discovering this, Mr Patrick Daniel, editor-in-chief of SPH's English and Malay Newspapers Division, sent a letter to Mr Tan Ek Kia, the interim chief executive of rail operator SMRT, apologising for the incident.

Ms Samantha Ann Francis was also sacked by SPH, which owns Stomp, on the same day.

Mr Daniel said in his letter to SMRT: 'My team and I would like to apologise unreservedly to SMRT for this erroneous report by one of our staff. We truly regret the damage this has caused SMRT.'

He added: 'Aside from breaching our professional ethics, what she (Ms Samantha Ann Francis) has done goes against all the values that we stand for.'

APOLOGY on STOMP

Statement by STOMP Editor, Azhar Kasman

STOMP would like to apologise for the posting on June 20, supposedly showing an SMRT train that left Lakeside station with one set of doors open. The report, submitted by a STOMP content producer, has been found to be fabricated.

The content producer, Ms Samantha Ann Samantha Ann Francis, had submitted the photo to STOMP, claiming that she had taken it when she was at Lakeside MRT Station at 10.15pm on June 19.

Following investigations by our staff, Ms Samantha Ann Francis has admitted that she had in fact taken the photo off a posting on Twitter. The original tweet has since been removed.

Ms Samantha Ann Francis has been dismissed by Singapore Press Holdings, which owns Stomp.

SPH sent a letter yesterday (24/5) to SMRT's interim CEO Tan Ek Kia apologising for the incident.

Mr Patrick Daniel, editor-in-chief of SPH's English and Malay Newspapers Division, said in the letter: "My team and I would like to apologise unreservedly to SMRT for this erroneous report by one of our staff. We truly regret the damage this has caused SMRT."

He added: "Aside from breaching our professional ethics, what Ms Samantha Ann Francis has done goes against all the values that we stand for."

As STOMP editor, I would also like to personally apologise to SMRT and members of the public for this erroneous article in STOMP. I deeply regret that one of our staff breached professional ethics and posted a fabricated report.

I would like to assure the public and all STOMP readers that the website does not tolerate such unethical behaviour.

We will also be reviewing our operating procedures and will do everything we can to prevent such a lapse from recurring.

Big Bang Concert Singapore 2012 SYNOPSIS

Launch Entertainment, Lushington Entertainments and Live Nation have proudly announced the Singapore stop of the BIGBANG Alive Tour 2012.

BIGBANG's first world tour is set to visit 22 cities in 14 countries, with Singapore being the first stop in South East Asia. Comprising of leader G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri, BIGBANG has garnered much praise and respect from music industry experts. Touted as the "revolutionary group of Korean music wave" and described by Billboard as "unstoppable", the members also achieved tremendous success with their solo activites. G-Dragon, T.O.P. and Seungri drove fans wild when they performed to a 35,000-strong crowd last year at the 2011 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. As the first headlining entertainment act of the three-day event, GD&TOP and Seungri enthralled audiences and showcased the best of Korean pop to a global audience at the Padang main stage.

They recently launched "Still Alive" – special edition of "Alive" – and swept all Korean music charts again. The MV of its lead single "Monster" gained over 3 million views on the first day of its release, setting record for the most views received by a KPOP artist within the shortest period of time. With such impressive accolades, it is safe to say that BIGBANG is unarguably one of South Korea's most potent exports.

BIGBANG ALIVE TOUR 2012 is a history marking collaboration between BIGBANG and the world's leading live entertainment company Live Nation. Live Nation has organized global tours for international renowned artists such as Madonna, Lady Gaga and U2. BIGBANG is the first Asian artist that Live Nation will have produced and promoted for its world tour.

Edison and Joyce Wu’s messages appeared to reveal that they were more than friendly with each other. One netizen commented, “Edison Chen has become a publicity tool for starlets to promote themselves!” Although Joyce’s friend hoped to reveal the shameful side of Edison’s advances, this appeared to have resulted in a backlash towards Joyce as an opportunist as well.

There seems to be no end to Edison Chen’s philandering ways as his provocative text messages to Chinese actress Joyce Wu came to light recently.
An insider tip-off claimed that the Hong Kong actor who was once romantically linked with various actresses and models such as Cammie Tse, Suki Wong and Jeana Ho, took the initiative to ask for Joyce’s number after working with her in a movie and asked the actress to meet in his hotel for a few times.
A screencap of Edison’s text message exchange with the actress was leaked online and the 31-year-old used “there’s not much to film tomorrow” as an excuse to meet Joyce at his hotel. Afraid that Joyce’s manager would know that they are in contact with each other, Edison instructed Joyce that she “cannot even tell your friends” about their meeting.
